Completing the first year
A year of rites — the karma days, the 13th day, every masikam — comes to a close with the aabdikam. It is a day of remembrance, and for many families, of quiet relief.
Relatives often gather again, so the aabdikam is usually larger than a masikam and the leaf is fuller. We cook the complete shraddha menu in madi, keep the items the purohit needs ready first, and serve the bhoktas and guests in the traditional order.
If we cooked your masikams through the year, the same cooks will be there for the aabdikam — the food will taste exactly as it has every month.
Why the date moves
The aabdikam is held on the tithi of passing, not on the calendar anniversary — so the two rarely match.
A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than the English year, so the tithi usually comes earlier. In a year with an adhika masam it can come later. Your purohit fixes the exact day — share it with us as soon as you have it.
Tip: families who booked masikams with us can ask us to note the aabdikam and yearly taddinam tithis as well.
What we take care of on the day
The whole kitchen, from the items for the rites to the last guest's meal.
Items for the rites
Prepared first in madi and kept apart, exactly as the purohit requires.
Brahmana bhojanam
The full shraddha leaf for the bhoktas, served in the traditional order.
Relatives and guests
A meal for everyone who has come, cooked to the same rules, for up to 50 people.
At home or delivered
Our cooks come to you, or we cook in our kitchen and deliver before the rites begin.
The aabdikam leaf
A typical aabdikam menu — fuller than a masikam leaf, as it marks the end of the first year. Always finalised with you and your purohit.
After the aabdikam, the taddinam every year
Once the first year is complete, the family performs the taddinam on the same tithi each year. We can cook it for you, year after year.
